Atrial fibrillation (AF)

Diagnostic and therapeutic approach

Diagnosis

Diagnosis

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an irregularly irregular arrhythmia.

ECG characteristic of AF.

We distinguish 5 categories of FA:

  1. paroxysmal AF. Disappear with or without treatment within 7 days of its occurrence.
  2. persistent AF. AF lasting for at least 7 days.
  3. persistent long term AF. AF duration> 12 months.
  4. Permanent      - If agreement between patient and doctor not to attempt the restoration of sinus rhythm.      - Acceptance of AF is based on a treatment decision of physician and patient rather than pathophysiological data.      - The acceptance of the AF may vary therapeutic response or if the preference of the physician or patient changes.
  5. Non-valvular AF. AF not associated with valvular disease or the presence of a valvular prosthesis.
